The two ISA preamps in the Focusrite ISA Two have a lineage stretching back to the ISA 110 modules built for George Martin by Rupert Neve in 1985. The design combined the best of cutting-edge solid-state electronics with Lundahl coupling to create one of the most revered preamp designs in the world. Read the full review from Music Matter.
The Lundahl LL1538 transformers in the ISA Two result in the characteristic extended frequency response of the ISA preamps, while retaining an almost transparent clarity. The transformer supplies 20dB of gain with the circuitry providing up to 60dB of additional gain, ensuring you get a clean signal from any situation with any mic. With this much gain it’s important to ensure you don’t clip your A-to-D converters, so the meters on the ISA Two can be user-calibrated to match your converters. This provides instant visual feedback at all times, and with plenty of headroom in the ISA Two you’ll be sure of pristine recordings all the way from source to DAW.
The two preamps can accept mic, line or hi-Z inputs, with four selectable input impedances for matching the preamp to your mic. The four options are Low (600 Ohms), ISA 110 (1.4 kiloOhms), which matches the input impedance of the original channel strips, Medium (2.4 kiloOhms) and High (6.8 kiloOhms). Two 1/4-inch hi-Z inputs are available on the front panel for use with hi-Z sources such as guitars, and each channel has its own rear panel 1/4-inch TRS insert point. As well as the mic preamp design, each channel on the ISA Two also houses a variable cut-off 18dB/octave high-pass filter, using the same filter design as the original ISA 110 channel strips.
