The sE2200a II is the latest evolution of the best-selling sE Electronics sE2200 large-diaphragm condenser microphone, adding switchable polar patterns and a new black rubber finish. Music Matter reviews the microphone.

se 2200a II

The sE 2200a II features a unique pop shield and shockmount system

Based on the same 1-inch gold sputtered diaphragm as the sE2200a, the new sE2200a II uses two diaphragms in a back-to-back design capsule, which are then summed or polarity inverted to achieve multiple polar patterns. The capsules are hand-made and individually tuned in sE’s factory in China to rigorous standards, ensuring an open and natural frequency response, with no hyped top-end. In addition to the original cardioid pattern, the sE2200a II has figure-of-eight and omni-directional patterns.

These new pickup patterns increase the versatility of the microphone considerably. The figure-of-eight pickup pattern enables the sE2200a II to be used in mid/side recording techniques, while the omni pattern can be put to use on drum overheads for a more open sound, or as part of a Decca tree microphone arrangement. continue reading…
